Technically advanced all-weather workwear with hi-visibility + brand stand-out

Delivery personnel are very much the face of Ocado – the online grocery store and one of the UK’s top ten fastest-growing brands [see BRANDZ™ THE UK’s TOP PERFORMING BRANDS 2019]. The well-being and appearance of these staff is critical to the success of this high-performance company.

Armed with detailed client input and after extensive wearer engagement, including on-the-job interviews and observational research, jSD developed an advanced multi-layer design system for Ocado’s workwear. The system cares for the wearer in all conditions from heatwave to winter snow and, of course, rain; and the garments are highly functional across all tasks from driving to unloading and customer interaction. Hi-visibility, easy care and durability were additional key features designed into these hard-working uniforms.

“The three-layer bonded fabric we created for the soft-shell jacket,” says Senior jSD Designer Christina Burke, “is both breathable and waterproof with a unique tweed-like effect, while the base layer polo shirts are made from an advanced, high-comfort wickable fabric. The cargo-style trousers and shorts have both all-purpose and job-specific pockets to make sure all the equipment fits whatever the weather. And every item not only matches the brand’s exact colour palette but also carries the distinctive Ocado swirl in reflective print. Even the baseball cap glows in the dark!”

When developing this reflective trim jSD took into consideration the environmental impact on the garment’s end-of-life disposal. The uniforms are part of Ocado’s corporate initiative to reduce landfill through recycling.

Rigorous wash, visibility and other health and safety tests were carried out by jSD during Design and Development followed by exhaustive Wearer Trials. The resulting unique designs are superbly fit for purpose and have great curb-side stand-out with a progressive and professional look that helps build brand trust.

The ordering system and distribution of this workwear is also unique, being run by jSD to fit Ocado’s very specific recruiting, training and other operational needs with maximum reliability and cost-efficiency. “For example, an automated HR file feeds into our bespoke online ordering system,” says jSD Sales and Marketing Director Ann Dowdeswell, “allowing new Ocado hires to order their workwear with minimum fuss or delay.”

Stock is held in a combination of jSD warehouses and Ocado distribution hubs across the UK for fast turn around, and jSD’s real-time data analysis and smart forecasting minimise inventory overhead for Ocado while maximising reliable availablity.”

Ocado customers only ever meet a delivery person. so it’s vital their custom workwear makes them feel great and helps build the brand.
