JSD has met the challenge to create a smart and comfortable clothing range, for a wide range of our different jobs and needs.
“We know it’s a challenge to develop a smart and comfortable corporate clothing range for so many different jobs and needs,” admits the Customer Service Director at Chiltern Railways. “That’s why we are so delighted with the chic collection that JSD has created – and the personal service their team delivers to us at every stage. As well as design, they manage the manufacturing process – sourcing fabrics and components globally – and run a full logistics service, to cover stock control, online ordering and delivery.”
Previously, this innovative UK train operator – part of Arriva plc – had had to adopt the group work wardrobe, and not promote its own distinctive brand identity. But alongside the strategy to change its image with faster and more modern trains, Chiltern Railways could now focus on identifying a uniform that reinforced the new brand. Chiltern also chose JSD because of our proven track record for delivery: the company had previously experienced ongoing supply issues, with lengthy wait times for stock and incorrect orders on delivery. Staff members were disillusioned, and this was another catalyst for change.
Commissioning JSD to design a stylish and functional staff uniform was a definite ‘first’ for the train operator. The bespoke collection of clothing and accessories that JSD created makes the 550+ staff – ground and ticket office staff, train drivers and maintenance teams – look professional, welcoming and approachable. “It’s a contemporary take on a classic rail range,” says our Managing Director, Susanne Malim. “Importantly, it reflects Chiltern Railways’ core values: ‘With care, with creativity, with each other’.”
JSD took the first brief and our design team then conducted detailed research. This included balancing high street trends with current working uniforms right across the transport sector. Suitable fabrics were identified and first samples created. Smart grey tailored suits for men and women are lifted with flashes of vivid cyan blue – and that extends to the co-ordinating bomber jackets, outer coats with quilted lining, and cargo trousers. The full collection has shirts and knitwear, with ties, scarves and accessories.
Employees, union representatives and management were all asked for feedback on the designs, at each stage of development. And now that it’s rolled out, we’re thrilled that – across the tracks – staff at Chiltern Railways are proud to be wearing this new bespoke collection.
