Uniforms and cultural identity (embracing diversity in the workplace)

Blog Uniforms And Cultural Identity

The religious and cultural identity of an employee can have a direct impact on their productivity and performance at work.  A failure to recognise these aspects of an employee’s life can easily transmit to a lack of thought or a lack of acceptance of the employee’s heritage.  Progressive employers in today’s market embrace the religious and cultural backgrounds of their employees and encourage the employee to incorporate elements such as a turban or a hijab into their everyday uniform wear.

Companies must be mindful of the Equality Act of 2010 at all times and ensure that their uniform policies aren’t so rigid that an employee might feel singled out or alienated for practicing his/her beliefs.  Embracing diversity in the workforce is one way of demonstrating to your employees that you respect their beliefs and your support their right to exercise those beliefs at work.
