Our Top Tips for the Perfect Christmas Party Outfit

The Christmas party season is fast approaching and after a long year at work, it’s time to get your glad rags on and let your hair down at the work Christmas party. But what to wear?

Navigating the work do dress code can be a precarious business. It can be tricky gauging the right tone for your work party outfit. You want to look great and make an impression, without standing out like a sore thumb, looking like you’ve tried too hard, or misreading the dress code. Knowing where it’s being held and if there’s a dress code, whether it’s a formal or informal sit-down affair, standing buffet or just drinks and canapes can be a good starting point as to how smartly or casually you should dress. Here are some tips to make sure you get it just right!

Jazz it up with sequins and glitter

Always a winner for a party look and luckily for us, fashion trends this season involve plenty of sequins, glitter and metallic colours so you’ll have no problem finding something for the occasion.

Women:
If you’re going all out, wear a sequinned dress or pick one of this season’s popular metallic pleated lame midi skirts. If that seems too OTT for you or you’re coming straight from the office, then pair a glittery knit or sparkly blouse with leather leggings or your work trousers for instant pizzazz.

Men:
Metallic and sparkly is not just an option for the ladies; men can wear it well too. Steer clear of Christmas jumpers and instead opt for a metallic shirt or one with gold or silver details. And don’t forget to wear that useful and impressive conversation starter, a statement watch.

Fabulous fun fabrics

This season, you’ll find a plethora of bold and colourful fabrics that will look fantastic and festive on everyone. Depending on the type of party you’re attending, you can make it the centrepiece of your outfit or use it to accessorise for a more understated look that will turn heads.

Women:
You are spoilt for choice this Christmas. With an 80s revival in full swing, you have your choice of leopard print everything, neon bright faux fur and shearling coats and jackets, luxe velvet blazers and jumpsuits, and leather skirts and trousers or leggings. Wear it loud and proud or brighten up your LBD with a splash of colour, be it a great jacket or a pair of tights.

Men:
Don’t be afraid to add some velvet for a festive touch. A midnight blue or forest green velvet jacket is the height of Hollywood glamour and very on point. If velvet feels too dandy for you, then accessorise your outfit with a leather, suede or cord bomber jacket for a super sharp look.

Dress up your work outfit

If you’re going straight from the office to the party and won’t have time for a full outfit change, you’ll need some quick and stylish accessories for the perfect day-to-evening look.

Women:
An elegant tux jacket should be a must-have fixture in your capsule wardrobe. An easy-to-wear item that can smarten up almost any trouser outfit and work dress, it’s perfect for the office party. Team it with a pair of statement heels and sparkly evening bag, this season’s must-have hoop earrings, add a slick of red lipstick and sparkly glitter eye shadow and you’ll be seamlessly transformed into a glamorous goddess.

Men:
For a smart party look, ditch the tie and shirt and dress down your work suit with a t-shirt, a roll-neck jumper or even a rugby shirt (yes, really!). If your office dress code tends to be more casual, add a blazer to your usual low-key day look for an immediate wow factor. Double or single breasted, fitted or deconstructed – all will work well this season. Experiment with colour, pattern and fabric for extra brownie points.

Pretty party shoes

Fancy footwear often trips people up. Knowing you’ll likely be on your feet all night either mingling or dancing, you want to make sure you’re comfortable… but you also want to put your best foot forward.

Women:
If you’re not able to pull off strappy sandals or skyscraper stilettos all evening, don’t despair. Consider leopard print kitten heels, sparkly gold or silver courts, or low-heeled metallic ankle boots – a big hit this winter. Release your inner rock chick without the blisters.

Men:
Never have men had it so good when it comes to footwear. This season, pick from a wide selection of brogues and loafers to suit any occasion. From more formal styles to the more casual, you can find some dress up or dress down shoes to match. For a smart casual look, pair a suit or jeans and jacket with some leather or suede trainers, but leave the Yeezy’s at home.
