Consulting on train uniforms at every stage
Each rail client has a unique set of service requirements that we analyse, before producing a uniform collection that will balance with their budget and brand. We take care to consult with the client at every stage: that way, our in-house design team ensures that all ‘fit for purpose’ elements of a job role are incorporated into the new rail company clothing. We recognise that our Toc clients want stylish working garments, across all job grades, ergonomically designed for their employees to wear on trains and on often chilly platforms. Giving Tocs best practice advice on the time implications associated with rail franchise uniform design, production and distribution is all part of our service. JSD will also advise on how long to allocate for each phase and how best to involve staff in the process, because we’ve worked with some of the biggest brands in the sector. With the Virgin Trains uniform contract, which JSD won in 2013, we conducted a full design process despite the incredibly tight deadline of just four months from initial brief to uniform delivery.
Managing change and employee buy-in
The way we help manage change and consult with unions and employees is every bit as important for clients as our ability to deliver rail staff uniforms that combine imaginative in-house garment design with sustainable manufacture. When we won the contract to create the chic Eurostar uniform in 2013, Eurostar involved its staff every step of the way and JSD managed the 23-month process, in two languages! That included 12 employee focus groups in three countries, internal road shows, a wearer guide, bespoke man packs and the Eurostar new uniform launch for all on-board and station staff, managed simultaneously at London St Pancras, in Paris, Brussels and Lille. We know that ‘What I wear to work’ is often the main focus of change for Toc employees. JSD has the credentials to work with clients to get union sign-off and staff agreement to new rail franchise uniforms. In turn, this can bring with it buy-in to any new employer-employee relationship and help build pride in the new rail franchise brand.
After service and flexibility is key
It’s very much a partnership between JSD, as your rail uniform specialist, and the Toc when we plan distribution. By interviewing key staff and working together, we plan and manage the logistics around a fail-safe launch. Our teams of account managers and designers make it their business to understand the rail company’s operations – like access and storage on platforms, and shift patterns – in order to manage delivery efficiently. Post launch communication is vital: our JSD accounts team tracks and monitors management and stock reports, and operates a dedicated helpdesk.
